Ward Based Plumbers will be deployed within wards to deal with water leaks and related challenges.
Their project scope will entail the verification, capturing information and installation of missing meters in low cost houses. It is estimated that there are approximately 20 000 low cost houses without water meters in the metro.
Unmetered houses contribute to Non-Revenue Water and by this intervention the Municipality will reduce unaccounted for water which costs the municipality millions of rands.
Each Ward plumber will be equipped with protective clothing and tools so that they can undertake their work and are recognizable to the public.
The cost for this project will be approximately R 2.5 million. 114 plumbers have been inducted.
“This project is part of our broader commitment of restoring dignity for our people. At the centre of this commitment, it is accelerated service delivery and a municipality that cares for its people. Water and sanitation is one of our areas of focus, water is life, sanitation is dignity,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan at the launch of Ward based plumbers in Nangoza Jebe Hall.
