PORT ELIZABETH – Residents of Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth are protesting the removal of illegal electrical connections in the area by the municipality earlier in the day.
It’s reported the disconnections at a substation were made without any prior warning.
According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the illegal connections were situated at the Walmer Gqebera Areas G and N.
The action was prompted by a recommendation during a community meeting that this should be done to avoid damage to electricity transformers in the area, the municipality reported.
In retaliation, protesters set fire to a car wash and threatened to burn down a councillor’s office.
A strong police presence continues to monitor the tense situation.
