Instead it will be via Port Elizabeth as the “Friendly City” gears up to host the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships which get under way today with a host of big names in action.
So far only one athlete has booked a ticket to the Games with LJ van Zyl clocking the required time at last weekend’s inter-club meeting to go with his medal winning exploits at last year’s World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. But there are a host of other athletes all in with a chance of reaching the required mark this weekend with Sunette Viljoen one of them as she takes her place in the women’s javelin line-up.
Viljoen has already ticked one of the boxes with her bronze medal at the World Championships counting towards a possible place and the African record holder will now need to register a throw of 61m locally to book her place.
“I’m looking forward to the championships. The preparations are going really well and I’m very happy. I’ve been working so hard leading into London and I’m really looking forward to the end of July,” Viljoen said ahead of this weekend’s championships.
