On Wednesday 16 March 2016 the DA student organisation (DASO) boycotted the PE College SRC induction in protest at the unlawful composition of its student body.
The SRC elections took place on 25 February at the three PE College campuses (Russell Road, Dower and Qhayiya) wherin DASO candidates won three (3) seats at Qhayiya campus, one (1) at Dower and one (1) at Russell Road campus.
However, the college management only wants to allocate three seats to DASO. After numerous engagements with the college management, they refuse to uphold the SRC Constitution.
Section 9 of the SRC Constitution states, the composition of the SRC shall be composed of four members per campus. No reference is made to the number of Nated (part-time) vs NCV (full-time) students.
In this case, college management is of the view that the composition of the SRC should be one (1) Nated student and three (3) NCV students per campus.
If indeed the seats were to be allocated in this manner, there should have been two different ballots for NCV NATED. Furthermore, were students informed of how they ought to vote?
Technically speaking if the allocation is 3:1, voting from the outset must be like that otherwise those ballots are spoiled.
Therefore, DASO reject the composition of the SRC as it is done unconstitutionally. On numerous occasions DASO requested the PE College management to uphold the Constitution and abide by its prescripts.
DASO is outraged that management refuse to uphold the law. We see this as a ploy by management to hold Sasco in power to avoid being held accountable.
The DA will continue to fight for the interests of students and hold management and the SRC accountable.
