SAA files complaint over Kulula ad

2013-03-13 09:29

South African Airways has filed an urgent complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority in response to Kulula’s latest ad campaign. Watch.WATCH

Port Elizabeth – Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at Port Elizabeth International Airport after the Easter weekend when flights were diverted to other airports due to heavy fog.

Beeld reports that most of the passengers were heading back to Gauteng after the long weekend and were left to wait from Sunday evening till Monday afternoon.

Apart from the mist, the instrument landing system on the main runway was also faulty, but has been fixed in the mean time.

According to Azaad Kassim, Port Elizabeth International Airport manager, the landing system wouldn’t have affected the flights, but a dense fog bank that had settled 70m above the ground made take-off impossible. Strong winds added to the problems.

However, what made the whole experience worse for SAA passengers was the fact that the national carrier did not communicate the delays sufficiently.

According to Isobel van den Heever from Hartbeespoort Dam she and her family had spent Easter Weekend in Jeffreys Bay and only found out about the delays when they arrived at the airport on Sunday night at 20:00.

She said that it would have made the situation much better if the airline had just sent them an SMS to inform them about the delays and added that passengers from other airlines were constantly receiving updated information via their cell phones.

The Van den Heevers and other SAA passengers were told to return to the airport on Monday morning to catch a flight at 06:00, but were once again left disappointed.

Most passengers only managed to board a flight after 15:00 on Monday afternoon.
