CAPE TOWN – Prison warders are searching the cell of the man accused of killing Jayde Panayiotou.
The alleged triggerman, Sizwezakhe Vumazonke is believed to have had access to a cellphone while in prison.
St Albans prison commissioner Mandla Jam said, “We only heard about an hour ago that he has a cellphone or he has access to the social network.”
Vumazonke has since been has been moved to a single cell as warders try to track down a cellphone he allegedly used to access his Facebook account.
Jam says while prison warders found no cellphone in Vumazonke’s possession, it does not mean he did not have access to one.
“I have removed him from the cell where he was staying and most probably had access to the social network.”
Meanwhile, it emerged last week that Vumazonke is only eligible for bail in December.
He can’t apply for bail because he was out on parole for an armed robbery conviction at the time of his arrest in connection with Panayiotou’s murder.
Vumazonke will only be able to apply for bail after Christmas.
He must first serve out his sentence for an armed robbery conviction.
Vumazonke’s attorney Ann Swanepoel said once he completes his sentence in December, he will be transferred to the awaiting trial section.
“And only then I will bring the bail application.”
