Outrage on imposition of official water restrictions

27 March 2015 By MyPortElizabeth

Dear MyPE

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is outraged to learn of the gazetting of water restrictions in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) by the Department of Water Affairs yesterday.

The restrictions are effective as of 1 March 2015.

The cutting of all water to our metro by fifteen percent sets us on course for a water crisis.

This is a crisis that could have been avoided were it not for the empty promises of the presidency to fund the completion of the Nooitgedacht Low Level water scheme.

This betrayal along with the dismal performance of our municipality in stopping the waste of approximately forty percent of our city’s water on an annual basis will leave the people of this metro high and dry.

Our municipality must fix the pipes and stop the waste.

The president needs to keep his word and urgently release the funding promised for the completion of the Nooitgedacht scheme.

Our residents are angry at the prospect of yet more disappointment from the ANC who have proven unable to ensure services that are affordable.

A DA run metro will ensure that we hold our executive to account for promises made. We will put a concrete plan in place to immediately reduce our water losses and to prioritize the completion of the Nooitgedacht scheme.

Water is a right and not a privilege. This crisis was avoidable, we need solutions not excuses.

Regards

Cllr Retief Odendaal
