An Opera Carnival will hit the Bay with the “Opera at South” concert on Sunday, 10 June 2018, at 3pm, in the South campus Auditorium, Nelson Mandela University, Summerstrand.
As one of the few Nelson Mandela Bay music projects inclusive of formally and informally trained classical talent display, aims to raise the metro’s abilities to a higher level by providing a tailor-made programme and intensive exchange between the artists, as well as more opportunities to perform on stage.
Akhona, joined the world-renowned Nelson Mandela University Choir in 2010 while studying music and travelled extensively with them. In 2014, at Diaz Primary School, he played the lead role as Mandela in “I am an African”. In 2016, at Westering High School, was the director of the Showtime award-winning musical “Ipi Tombi”. He served as director and conductor of various groups, including Eastern Cape Youth Choir among others. This young man just came back from Qatar (Doha) where he taught music at an International School and is back to provide only high quality productions and share his music expertise.
Akhona Nkumanda (producer) with a wide range of opera cuisine from Italian, German and French is ready to serve the Nelson Mandela Bay audience and opera lovers. You will have a teaser of all-time opera favourites and at the same time, learn about the opera’s historical background, artistic and cultural aspects. Produced and performed by Akhona Nkumanda (Bass-baritone), alongside Liske Hemingway (Soprano), Lucretia Sikwebu (Mezzo-soprano), Lunga Lutywantsi (Tenor) and accompanied by Isabella Scheepers. These amazing and talented soloists will be joined by the powerful 16 member Nelson Mandela Chorus under the baton of Nkosinathi Khalipha.
