And it pays even more so if you are part of the ruling party, the top dogs, the main manne wiff influence.
Or so my recent foray into a quick look at members interests listed on the new People’s Assembly web site.
The People’s Assembly site seeks to present information on MP’s (and their activities or lack thereof) in a transparent manner allowing you to discover info on your MP such as; comments made in committee meetings, written questions they have asked in Parliament, financial disclosures – such as how many houses they own, or companies they are directors of, attendance record, speeches in Hansard and contact details.
My special interest is the Eastern Cape and our National Assembly Members.
It just so happens that the first 6 members listed equally represent the Ruling Party and the Official Opposition:
- Annette Steyn – Democratic Alliance (DA)
- Annette Theresa Lovemore – Democratic Alliance (DA)
- Cedric Thomas Frolick – African National Congress (ANC)
- Donald Cecil Smiles – Democratic Alliance (DA)
- Grant Trevor Snell – African National Congress (ANC)
- Gugile Ernest Nkwinti – African National Congress (ANC)
Click on each of the above to see each of the members interests as listed by the People’s Assembly and you will see a trend – those members with allegiance to the Ruling Party have a LOT more members interests than those who are part of the Official Opposition.
There are some who would argue that this is a good thing and there are some who would say it isn’t a good thing.
I say that this is an important indicator going forward – if the DA become the ruling party and begin to accumulate members interests as the ANC has done then that will be a signal to the public need to vote the next official opposition in and give them a chance to guzzle at the trough of the taxpayer.
Now who said that we aren’t a caring society?
