Between 2013 and 2015 not a single title deed was handed over in Nelson Mandela Bay. This is according to an official Ministerial reply in Parliament.
While the NMB municipality has handed out poorly constructed houses it didn’t care enough to allocate official ownership of the units, 40 000 of which now require total reconstruction or rectification because of their build quality. Under the ANC houses are poorly built, fall apart, and are not being legally handed over to residents.
The ANC is systematically locking hundreds of thousands of NMB residents out of home ownership by withholding thousands of titles deeds from RDP housing beneficiaries.
During the same period, the DA-led City of Cape Town handed out 7924 title deeds to first-time home owners, as the DA government continues to improve lives. This is the change we need to move forward again in NMB too.
While housing in NMB remains under National Government ICU, not even Minister Sisulu’s intervention has borne fruit: only 15% of targeted housing handovers were completed by December 2015. In additiont to not handing over ownership, NMB is hopelessly behind on actual construction and actual delivery of homes.
The DA is passionately committed to home ownership for the people who are still denied homes by the ANC. Progress to the dignity of home ownership has stalled under Jacob Zuma and Danny Jordaan.
This is why in government the DA will build thousands of new, quality homes and will ensure that qualifying beneficiaires receive title deeds on handover.
We want people to experience the joy and pride of owning their own home so that they can begin to climb the ladder of opportunity, where homes become assets.
The DA is set on winning Nelson Mandela Bay at this year’s local government election so that houses are built properly the first time, are handed over with title deeds to rightful owners, and receive better services.
