PORT ELIZABETH – Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Athol Trollip says the DA will have to sit with coalition partners to decide on a way forward.

He says a decision on who will fill the deputy mayor position will have to come from that meeting.

Trollip made the comments following The Patriotic Alliance’s withdrawal from the coalition.

The party pulled out in protest at the DA’s failure to meet its demands for the Deputy Mayor position.

It’s been left vacant after UDM’s Mongameli Bobani was controversially ousted in last month’s council meeting in Port Elizabeth.

The DA says it refuses to be blackmailed.

“The Patriotic Alliance has one councillor in this council of ours, the African Christian Democratic Party has one councillor and the Congress of the People have one councillor and we have 57 councillors so what gives the Patriotic Alliance the right to lay claim to two positions that the ACDP doesn’t have, that Cope doesn’t have,” said Athol Trollip, Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor.
