Bob Eveleigh: A new ballet school, The Ballet Conservatory, has been opened in Port Elizabeth by Siobhan Day, a qualified teacher in the RAD ballet tradition.
Siobhan has always dreamed of opening her own ballet studio and passing on her love and passion for classical ballet to others and new dream has become a reality.
She has been a part of the dance world in PE for many years, having performed in and choreographed works for the Friendly City Youth Ballet, worked alongside the Russian Imperial Ballet as dance mistress for the Port Elizabeth region and continues to work on show productions for local schools. She is also a committee member for the Royal Academy of Dance and Port Elizabeth Dance Festival.
As a choreographer and junior musical theatre producer, Siobhan has also excelled.
In 2011, as a student teacher at Collegiate Junior School for Girls, she won two Junior Showtime awards (primary schools) for her staging of the numbers in Suessical: The Musical, and also won the best Show Routine accolade two years later in the Grey/Collegiate staging of The King and I, for her choreography of the Small House of Uncle Thomas Ballet in the musical.
She again won Best Show Routine Awards at both Primary and High School levels in this year’s recent Clover Showtime Awards evenings, having staged Be Our Guest in Disney’s Beauty the Beast for her own school, Collegiate Junior, and the lengthy Church Social sequence for Grey High’s stage version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
She thus shows extreme ability in the handling of young performers but is also very excited to be working alongside wonderful dance teachers in the Port Elizabeth region.
She is especially grateful to Troy Coffey, her mentor, from Walmer School of Dance for all the hours of guidance and friendship, they have spent together.
Siobhan’s classes are based in the Main Hall of the Diaz Club, in Worraker Street, Newton Park.
Conservatory classes are offered to children from 4 years old as well as beginner adult ballet classes.
