Traffic officers in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro have downed tools. They are protesting against the lack of consultation about the establishment of a Metro Police force.
The officers protested at the council chambers, but were prevented from entering the chambers to voice their grievances.
The council was in sitting.
Traffic officers say they are not opposed to the creation of a Metro Police force, but they have not been properly consulted and are in the dark.
NMB Assistant Superintendent Liboy Nangu says: “We had a meeting with the municipal manager where he instructed the directors to come up with a meaningful consultation. It was three months ago, up until now it did not happen.”
Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, says the issue was discussed at a council meeting and that the traffic officers need not be concerned.
Baron says a workshop has been scheduled for June 3 between affected parties.
