The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is gearing up for an awesome sporting spectacular this week, kicking off with the clash between Jomo Cosmos and Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday.

Access Management CEO, Stephan Pretorius, said the stadium was well prepared and looking forward to hosting the first PSL game of the year.

With a full week of sporting events, including the PSL game on Wednesday, the Southern Kings vs the Sharks Super Rugby friendly match on Friday and the Orlando Pirates vs. Recreativo do Libolo of Angola in the Pirates’ first Confederation Of African Football (CAF) game on Sunday, Pretorius said the stadium had been a hive of activity.

“Everything is in place, from food and beverages to safety and security, and everything in between,” he said.

Despite a strenuous and somewhat dramatic build up to the second half of the Absa Premier League challenge, both Jomo Cosmos and Kaizer Chiefs are well rested and ready for the challenge, with kickoff scheduled for 7.30pm on Wednesday evening.

Jomo Cosmos will be looking to make a point as they meet up against the Glamour Boys, following their 2 – 1 defeat against Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in August last year.

Club boss, Jono Somo, has been very busy over the break, and has secured the likes of Mark Haskins, albeit on a temporary basis, as well as signing Russell Mwafulirwa to beef up Ezenkosi’s attacking arsenal.

Combine them with the left wing wizardry of African Warriors star, Tshepo Tomonyane, and the return of Namibian stalwart, Lazarus Kaimbi, and you have a squad brimming with experience, confidence and the will to compete.

Chiefs fans will be pleased to hear that Head Coach Vladimir Vermezovic has confirmed that Captain and goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, who made his debut for the Chiefs against Jomo Cosmos in 2007, will also be ready to play in the showdown match.

‘VV’, as the Kaizer Chiefs mentor is affectionately known in football circles, reiterated that Absa Premiership remains the club’s priority going into the second half of the season.

“The first three games will be very important for us. Good start is as important as finishing well. This also makes the last five games of the season very important but we will take it one game at a time.

“Our focus now is on Jomo Cosmos in Port Elizabeth. They are not an easy side to play against and people should not even mention that they are on bottom of the league – that will count nothing when we meet come Wednesday,” said Vermezovic.

Tickets for Wednesday’s PSL game are on sale for just R40 per person and are available through Computicket. Gates open at 4.30pm.
