PORT ELIZABETH – The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro looks set to become the site of a political battle.
At least three contenders are eyeing the Port Elizabeth area ahead of next year’s local government elections.
Currently run by the ANC, the metro is plagued by service delivery problems.
The DA’s aims are clear — it’s chosen the city to host its elective conference.
Provincial party leader Athol Trollip, who has his eye on the post of federal chair, has already hit the campaign trail.
He believes the DA can topple the ANC in the metro.
The ruling party fell below the crucial 50 percent mark to 49 in last year’s national elections.
The DA is hoping to win over disgruntled voters fed up with service delivery backlogs.
