CAPE TOWN – A 31-year-old man has been handed a life sentence for killing Nelson Mandela Bay Councillor Buyisile Mkavu.
Bongani Cagwe shot the former councillor multiple times on 2 August 2014.
The Port Elizabeth High Court handed down sentence on Friday.
The court heard a man who paid Cagwe R17,000 to kill Mkavu was shot and killed a day after Cagwe’s arrest.
Hawks spokesperson Anelisa Feni explains the details around the Cagwe’s sentencing: “Cagwe was also sentenced to five years imprisonment for the possession of unlicensed firearms. He also has one year for the possession of unlicensed ammunition.”
Meanwhile, the Hawks says more arrests are imminent in connection with the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Hannes Baatjies in the Northern Cape.
One person has been arrested after the 49-year-old was found dead near his car in Groenwater, just hours before he was to be sworn in as a DA councillor last week.
