CAPE TOWN – A Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality councillor, who was called a baboon in a full council meeting, said he felt “naked” during the incident.
Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Chris Roberts last year referred to his United Democratic Movement counterpart, Mongameli Bobani, as “Councillor Baboon”.
Roberts was on Thursday found guilty of racist speech by the speaker of the council following a lengthy investigation into the matter.
Roberts, who was hauled in front of the DA’s Federal Executive Committee, apologised for the remark, saying it was a play on words as councillor Bobani’s surname sounded similar to “baboon”.
Bobani said Roberts humiliated him and he felt he was disrespected, and his humanity insulted.
“I felt as if someone has just taken off all my clothes off and felt naked in front of everyone. That’s how I felt, very painful.”
The African National Congress has called on Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Fikile Xasa to fire Roberts.
