Need to preserve wetlands

Zuma fiddles while country burns

A STORM comes, blows wind, wreaks havoc, leaves debris behind and then the dust settles. So it is with President Jacob Zuma’s state of the nation address last week, and editors and commentators have all waxed lyrical on the topic.

Children benefit from mass events

I HAVE simmered for a few days over the Indaba column written by Piet Naude on February 7 (“Mass events with selfish goals”).

Beware two con artists

THIS is a warning to all schools and businesses in the Central area. There are two women, one middle-aged and one younger, who are conning their way into offices.

Don’t ruin Earth for our kids

IN reaction to “An observer’” regarding apparent “scare” tactics by anti-nuclear lobbyists trying to create awareness as to the dangers of Eskom building a nuclear power station at Thyspunt (“We need power, so drop scare tactics”, February 2), it’s ironic that you end your letter by saying “let’s move forward into the 21st century”.

JULIUS Malema reminds me of something said to me years ago: “I would rather keep my mouth closed and thought to be stupid than open it and remove all doubt”.

Police car used for shopping

MY wife was waiting in her car for our son to return from the Bluewater Bay Spar at 5.57pm on Friday, when she noticed a woman in civilian clothes carrying shopping bags to a SAPS vehicle.

Nuclear power has many risks

IN response to the letter, “We need power, so drop scare tactics” (February 2), yes, we need power (energy), but we also need to try to protect and conserve our coastline, our country and the earth – what is left of it anyway!

Use a reputable leasing agent

IN response to the article, “Tenants have landlords over a barrel” (February 9), generalising that “letting agents are not doing their jobs properly”, we wish to point out that we at Harcourts Beachfront screen our tenants properly, we conduct thorough credit and reference checks before presenting tenants to landlords.

Who else at CSA received bonuses?

CRICKET has been in the media quite often recently, but mainly for the wrong reasons. The entire saga regarding the Cricket South Africa (CSA) bonus “scandal” has made for very interesting reading and even viewing because of some of the role players.

Municipality must jack up security for park

WHAT a pity that yet another great Port Elizabeth tradition seems to be slipping from our grasp. The Mannville theatre in St George’s Park is well known to thousands of matric pupils who have eagerly flocked to watch their setwork Shakespeare every year at this time.

Thank you to league

WE should like to extend our congratulations and thanks to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League. Over the past two weekends it has held spayathons at its Cleary Park Clinic, and managed to treat and sterilise 102 animals during this time.

R300m could be huge boost

IT is great to see young people being able to swing golf clubs on the new Uitenhage Golf Club facility (“In the swing”, February 13).

Residents interested only in service delivery

THE current conundrum in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is hard-hitting to us as a community, as this power struggle tampers with service delivery.

Township schools face many challenges

WITH reference to the letter, “Let us help fix the schools crisis” (January 26), the writer sounds like somebody who does not understand the true state of facts between ex-Model C schools and township schools.

ANC lion loses its roar

ROAD safety, what a joke. Potholelizabeth’s roads are stuffed, with dongas and bushes encroaching on roads. Viva ANC, congratulations on your 100 years of corruption and no progress.

Mess no way to honour the dead

WHAT a disgusting, despicable mess the Forest Hill graveyard in Port Elizabeth has become. Is this the way to honour our dearly departed?

SOUTH Africans’ sick obsession with sport enables them to (expensively) sublimate their life realities. Piet Naude, you are spot-on!

Education on abuse needed

IT was with the utmost astonishment and horror that I read the report, “Animal cruelty case dropped” (February 6). According to East London SPCA manager Lionel Taylor, there was ample evidence to support the case.

Mbeki still has contribution to make

THERE’s been a pretty impressive debate on the dubbed “Thabo Mbeki’s second coming” and interesting views have since been advanced. There have been some suggestions that he needs to keep the stature of the statesman and stay permanently outside of internal party politics.

Ditch alliance, form new party

MANY, many years ago my mentor told me, “If the boss steals, the staff think that they are entitled to steal as well”.

The plight of the poor rhino

Run for enjoyment

IT seems Piet Naude is either stirring again, or has some definite limitations in his appreciation of what sport is about (“Mass events with selfish goals”, February 7). In particular, his costing estimates belie the fact that he is obviously used to the good life, and wouldn’t consider doing anything at the level of a mere commoner.

Community also has role in teaching kids

THERE is one factor we should consider when tackling the education system in our country: that is learning begins at home. The teaching of a child is a collective effort, where everybody plays his part in the upbringing of a child.

Nonsense to suggest only one way to moral life

ONE gets the impression Piet Naude is running out of ideas. In his column, “Mass events with selfish goals” (February 7), he takes casual sideswipes at slimming products, supplements, patriarchal psychology and the desire people have to look attractive physically.

hank you to cops for rescuing disturbed man

I’M writing this letter to show my gratitude to and admiration for three constables of Humewood police.

Rather be a competitor than sloth

I AGREE with Piet Naude that participation in sport is an exclusive activity, available only to the privileged (“Mass events with selfish goals”, February 7).
