There were 4 910 students from Africa studying at Eastern Cape universities in 2010, High Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande has told the National Assembly.
Replying to a written question, the Minister said that 4 065 of the students were from SADC countries â€“ 1 388 at Fort Hare, 1 134 at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 1 190 at Rhodes and 353 at Walter Sisulu.
Nzimande said of the 845 students from the rest of Africa at Eastern Cape universities in 2010, 190 were at Fort Hare, 428 at NMMU, 134 at Rhodes and 93 at Walter Sisulu.
The numbers have remained relatively constant for the past four years.
