League able to spay 62 animals

WITH the help of volunteers, and the support of Adele Ochse of Stonehouse Capital and Adrian and Tracey Meistre of Bay Wealth Management, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League was able to spay 62 animals in Motherwell last weekend. We would like to thank all involved for their invaluable help.

Time for introspection on state of country

TODAY we celebrate 18 years of our freedom, and not the massacres of black people nor the tragic death of Chris Hani. It is high time that we do an introspection, looking at our achievements and failures as a nation.

Poor example by metro cop

DRIVING from Bluewater Bay to Coega on Thursday afternoon, I saw an NMMM traffic officer urinating, standing about 10m away from his vehicle with its flashing lights between the Bluewater Bay and Motherwell turn-offs. I hooted at him, but he ignored me as well as other road users.

VAVI’s kind think only of themselves. Be a factory worker to understand that these people are hypocrites and are only interested in their bank accounts.

We must continue to work for a unified SA

AS our nation celebrates Freedom Day, we must all continue to strive for a united South Africa. We enter our 18th year of freedom within the context of a strongly positive mood among the masses of our people, who remain confident that we will make further advances towards the achievement of the goal of a better life for all.

Cop slices supporters’ banner

IN support of some of our friends doing the Ironman race we cable-tied our banner to one of the municipal road closure signs (which appeared to be unused as the race had started and it was positioned off the side of the road in Schoenmakerskop).

ON Friday, The ANC backs Mannya! On Tuesday, Mannya OUT! Who wants to be backed by the ANC? Have they any idea of what is going on?

Support this tournament

ANOTHER major hockey tournament is currently under way at the Gelvan astroturf (“EP pipped at post by KZN in thriller match”, April 24). This facility is probably one of the best in the country.

EC town subject of focus

Great job by Bay in hosting Ironman

WOW! Port Elizabeth can really feel proud after hosting another phenomenal event in this year’s SpecSavers Ironman (“‘Bay supporters the best’”, April 23).

Crime stealing best academic minds

THE article by Rhodes University vice-chancellor Saleem Badat touched me (“We’ve lost one of our best”, April 23) and not only the article itself, but also the person about whom the article was written, the late Lelona Thembakazi Fufu. This is a story of a typical township student.

Extremism may cause some to fall

IN response to Lee Ward Able’s letter, “Column painted distortion of true Christian faith” (April 23), while I think the letter is excellent and I concur wholeheartedly with the content, Kazeka Mashologu Kuse’s column, “Religious extremism drives believers to atheism” (April 17), also has validity. As a counsellor I have experienced many believers who question their faith because of the extremity of their religious experiences.

Frightening rise in killings

IT is frightening to think that the mowing-down of criminals is not going to abate, but is on the rise due to the obvious permissible (so it would appear) attitude of our justice system.

Beware of projects that lose investors’ money

AM I the only person worried about the investors who are funding these “Titanic developments” (sinking ships) and many times without our consent? Are we going to allow more funds from investors to go down the drain? When is this going to stop?

Reminded of Mithras of ancient times

LEE Ward Able’s letter, “Column painted distortion of true Christian faith” (April 23), reminded me of reading about Mithras in Tess Gerritsen’s book, The Mephisto Club.

Birds being poisoned

WHAT drives someone to feel that he or she has the right to poison animals? Don’t they realise that not only are they tampering with the ecology of Theescombe and the surrounding areas by poisoning guinea fowl, but they could possibly end up with a murder charge as the local underprivileged community has been known to eat felled guinea fowl.

Clean up polluted Swartkops River

WITH reference to the article, “Buckets unemptied for weeks” (April 20), as an environmentalist involved with ongoing campaigning to stop pollution from entering the Swartkops River, this is again a huge setback and I am very angry!

Steyr served farming family well

READING the story by the irrepressible correspondent, Mike Jones (“How rare Steyr met its match”, April 3) and then the story of the people of Port Elizabeth who live to a very great age,

Quick action by mayor

Good exhibition

GIVE praise where praise is due. Congratulations to ArtEC on its latest New Signatures exhibition.

Attack on woman racist

THE article on the vicious attack on Lorna Poulter (“Donkey attack: man appears in court”, April 11) has prompted me to ask why such an attack by an African man on a white woman is not reported on, or referred to, as a “racist attack”.

Lack of skills, money, time for restoration

I THINK the issue of the restoration of the historical houses in Donkin Street needs to be considered in the light of where we stand now (“‘Renovation’ destroys character of Donkin St houses”, April 18). These houses were built in a time when people had lots of time on their hands.

Numsa must realise it has no mandate to run metro

I READ with disgust the statement by Numsa in response to the call by the ANCYL to redeploy the mayor and the “three sisters” (“Numsa steps in on Wayile”, April 20). Firstly, the ANCYL, as an integral part of the ruling ANC, has a right to voice its dissatisfaction with any deployee of the ANC.

Save train before it’s irretrievable

I AM incredibly frustrated at the decline of the Apple Express in Port Elizabeth. For years it has been a beacon for tourism in Port Elizabeth and now this heritage icon is suffering.

Fortunate to have job today

THE letter, “Consider well-being of staff” (April 19), is totally the biggest c*** under the sun. My husband is employed in the motor industry and works shifts every week which alternate on a weekly basis.

Waits all day at hospital

LAST week a close friend of mine was regretfully referred to Livingstone Hospital by the Algoa Park Clinic. She is not an uneducated person and, trust me, if she could have, she would have opted for personal medical aid care.

Thanks for tickets

THANK you for the Abba tickets I won. The show was fantastic, it took me back a good few years.

Govt must act or SA will be unmanageable

IT is becoming clear that if Jacob Zuma, the ANC NEC and the ANC politicians do not start acting like responsible governors, this country will soon become unmanageable.
