Port Elizabeth – This mornings special council meeting to discuss the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality’s budget for the 2015/2016 financial year was disrupted by a small group of disgruntled workers.
A small group of South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members, totalling no more than 20, stormed the council chambers in Military Road, banged against the closed doors of the council chambers and toyi-toyied in the foyer.
Municipal Speaker Maria Hermans called for a break in council proceedings and assured the councillors and other attendees that they were safe within council chambers.
Hermans later said that the group had apparently been protesting about the fact that they had been denied access to the council meeting.
Council proceedings then resumed.
