NELSON MANDELA BAY – The SPCA in Uitenhage has had to close its doors because of a dispute with the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
It claims it’s owed R160,000 by the Metro which, if not paid, could result in a bleak Christmas for staff and a tragic end for the animals at the centre.
The municipality accused the SPCA of flouting its service providers’ compliance policy.
The situation is dire since the shelter’s doors closed four months ago.
The SPCA managed to feed the animals up to now, with donations from the public but the money should run out by Friday.
The Metro hasn’t paid its only pound since June, saying first it must be registered and be tax compliant with SARS.
