In a press statement released on 16 May, Executive Mayor Athol Trolip says:
Operations within the Public Health Directorate are set to be placed under new political leadership, so that we can improve service delivery to the people of this Metro.
I have removed Cllr Mongameli Bobani from the position of Mayoral Committee Member for Public Health.
A replacement MMC will be announced in due course, and until then the Directorate will be placed under my direct political leadership.
The Directorate has been of concern for a number a months given serious allegations of maladministration and impropriety, all of which are being investigated.
Furthermore, Cllr Bobani’s public behaviour and conduct has been unacceptable as a member of my Mayoral Committee and not consistent with what is expected of a Deputy Mayor.
I have attempted on numerous occasions to address Cllr Bobani’s conduct through the UDM’s National Leadership. Cllr Bobani has gone too far with his continued unsubstantiated defamatory remarks, spurious public statements and recently laid criminal charges against senior executive administrators.
In NMB the people of our metro always come first, and this difficult decision is to secure the very best governance possible going forward.
My intention is to ensure that this government is stable and able to deliver better services, stop corruption and grow the economy to create jobs.
Cllr Bobani has done everything to prevent this from happening.
The process to have Cllr Bobani removed as Deputy Mayor will be pursued through Council.
EDITOR: I only have one thing to say; “A man who does this – Illegal sign ‘Bobani for Mayor’ – starts out as NOT Mayor material!”
