Is the newly renovated Campanile accessible for wheelchair-bound tourists and locals alike?
This challenging question was posed by Brian Bezuidenhout, Executive Director for the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities in Nelson Mandela Bay. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, Andrew Whitfield, accepted the challenge.
On Thursday, 14 September Bezuidenhout and Whitfield will meet at Noninzi Luzipho Building (formerly known as Pleinhuis) at 10:00 am, strap Whitfield in a wheelchair and make the journey to the iconic Port Elizabeth attraction.
Two additional bells were added to the clarion to make a full 25 notes – middle C and 12 either side.
The 100 year old keyboard (SEE: I Got So Excited When I Saw This 100 Year-Old Keyboard) has had electronics added to it enabling a full range of music to be played and the bells are now also driven by computer allowing for the repertoire to be expanded somewhat.
