The escalating incidents of gang-related crime in Port Elizabeth are on the radar of the Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko.
He engaged with the community of New Brighton in the Metro on Saturday to get a first hand view of the crime problems in the area.
Three people were killed recently inside a tavern in the area in a gang related incident.
Nhleko appealed to the community and structures of society to form a united front against crime and corruption.
“It is a worrying kind of factor that you have a multiple of criminal gangs and therefore we need to step up efforts in terms of the prevalence of gangs in the community. But at the same time, we need to begin to look at broader social programmes that must also be driven, that deal with the socio-economic circumstances of this area.”
