The memorial service of former Eastern Province and SA Rugby Assocation star Zolile Matomela will be held in KwaNobuhle on Wednesday (May 20). He passed away on Saturday, aged 68.
Born in 1947 in Kirkwood, Matomela revealed his potential as a centre when he made his club debut for Star of Hope in 1967. He also turned out for the EP Rugby Association as well as the SA Rugby Association – the national team was the SA Leopards – in the seventies and eighties.
One of his colleagues in his provincial playing days was current EP Rugby executive committee member Freddie Makoki, who paid tribute to Matomela; “He was a great guy to play with and one of the brilliant centres in our time,” Makoki said. “We had many memorable times in our matches when we played together, and I also played against him at a club level. He was a top player for Uitenhage team Star of Hope who were a very strong side at that time.”
The EP Rugby Union extends its condolences to his family.
Following Wednesday’s memorial service at the Babs Madlakane Hall in KwaNobhle at 18.00, a funeral service will be held on Saturday at the Assembly of God church in Uitenhage, starting at 10.00.
