On Monday 28 November, during the early hours, the NU 11 Clinic in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) was targeted by thieves who vandalised the facility in the most irresponsible fashion. This is the latest of a number of break-ins at clinics in the metro.
Copper piping was stolen from the geyser so – during this period of water restrictions in our city – water gushed out of the geyser, destroyed patients’ records and damaging infrastructure.
This is a huge setback for patients and the overworked staff who will be expected to spend hours capturing patient details to recreate watered down record cards and to soldier on while flooring is replaced and walls are repainted.
It means that yet another busy clinic will have to close for repairs and that the resources of already overburdened clinics in the area will be stretched even further to the detriment of all patients and staff.
It poses a health risk to every single patient who relies on health services at the NU 11 Clinic.
I have written to the MEC for Health, Dr Phumza Dyantyi, to request that contingency measures, including security support, to be instituted at the NU 11 Clinic within the next seven days.
We cannot allow thieves to destabilise service delivery to vulnerable patients.
The people of the Eastern Cape deserve fair treatment in safe facilities that match clinic standards in the DA-run Western Cape.
This is their right and we will persist until state health services in the Eastern Cape are equal to the standards of state health care services in the Western Cape.
