Following their 4-2 loss in a pre-season friendly against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, Chippa United captain, Andile Mbenyane, said there’s progress in the team as they prepare for the upcoming 2014/15 Absa Premiership season.
The Paarl-born player scored the Chilli Boys’ first goal at their new home base, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Mbenyane also revealed that their mission is to stay in the PSL this season.
Speaking to the crew, the attacking midfielder-cum-striker said his role is to help the team both on-and-off the field.
“I think there’s progress in our pre-season preparations because we were concerned about moving to PE as we were still training in Cape Town. Now that we’re in PE, we just have to focus on our football now. We’re worried about leaking in four goals in one game. I think such games will allow us to work on defending and not only focusing on attacking. We want to stay in the PSL this season and not go back to the NFD.
“I helped in guiding the youngsters in keeping them focused and we achieved success in the end as we gained promotion. My role is not only to help in the field of play but off the field as well. I must keep the youngsters and new guys happy and motivate them by sharing the club’s ambitions with them,” said Mbenyane.
Chippa United’s return to the PSL will see them open their 2014/15 campaign with a home tie against Platinum Stars on Friday, August 8 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
