Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Zanoxolo Wayile launched the municipality’s back-to-school campaign during the reopening of schools on Wednesday.

He, in partnership with local business, donated thousands of lap desks and stationery. Schools he visited included Kwazakhele High School and Alfonso Arries Primary School.

“Education is everyone’s concern, not only that of the department of education,” Wayile said.

Acting school principal at Alfonso Arries Primary School Sipho Bodlani said his school was experiencing a problem of high water bills and asked the mayor to help install an above ground water meter to be able to monitor the usage.

The team also visited Mzamomhle Special Needs School in KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage where the group of councillors and business people made an inspection and interacted with pupils and teachers.

Loads of stationery were handed over to ease the burden on teachers who have to teach special needs children from poor families.

The back-to-school campaign also includes collection of old school uniforms and shoes to be donated to needy pupils.
