A goal from Katlego Mashego on the stroke of half-time was enough to secure three points for Moroka Swallows against Maritzburg United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday evening.
Maritzburg headed into the match unbeaten in the last five Premiership encounters, but it was the visitors who fashioned most of the chances during the early exchanges.
Mashego and Siyabonga Nomvethe’s efforts though didn’t really bother Shu-Aib Walters in the Maritzburg goal.
Mashego had a strike ruled out for off-side late in the first half, but Swallows kept plugging away and got the breakthrough in the dying minutes as the veteran striker slotted home Dikgang Mabalane’s cross from the right-hand side.
Mabalane moved down the right flank and cut back to Mashego, who left two players in his wake by coming back inside, to score from the centre of the area.
The hosts proved to be more of a threat in the second half as Michael Morton tested Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia with a right-footed effort from the left while Cuthbert Malajila proved to be wasteful in front of goal.
Malajila’s best chance came in the 68th minute when Delron Buckley’s through ball put him in the clear, but he dragged his shot wide when he was one-on-one with Etafia.
The Swallows keeper also tipped over a dipping shot from Buckley, but Mario Booysen nearly had the last laugh as his header from winger Dillon Sheppard’s free-kick hit the crossbar late in the game.
The victory helps the Birds to join Maritzburg on 34 points, but the Team of Choice remain sixth in the standings courtesy their better goal difference.
