The Team of Choice have opted to stay in KwaZulu-Natal after receiving a “tempting” offer to switch provinces from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.
“In recent weeks, the news was abuzz that the Team of Choice could be relocating to Port Elizabeth and making the Nelson Mandela Bay 2010 World Cup Stadium our home base,” United spokesman Brian Zuma is quoted as saying on the club’s website.
“Whilst many stories and comments were made in the media regarding the possible move by MUFC, the directors of the club played their cards close to their chests choosing to keep this a boardroom matter and not be drawn to the temptation of responding to media sensationalism.
“The Maritzburg United board of directors have since resolved on the matter.
“Subsequent to an offer from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality for the club to relocate to Port Elizabeth, the directors have applied their minds on the offer at hand, and after careful consideration of a number of critical factors, they came to a conclusion that Maritzburg United will not accept the offer to relocate to Port Elizabeth.
“The chairman and the board were appreciative of the gesture by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, for a very good and tempting offer they had made to the club, but believed that remaining in Pietermaritzburg was the more reasonable option in the longer run.
