Maritzburg United Markerting and Communications Manager Brian Zuma says the club will remain in Pietermartizburg, rubbishing reports that they’ll be relocating to Port Elizabeth
“In recent weeks, the news was abuzz that the Team of Choice could be relocating to Port Elizabeth and making the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium our home-base.
“Subsequent to an offer from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality for the club to relocate to Port Elizabeth, the Directors have applied their minds on the offer at hand and after careful consideration of a number of factors, they came to a conclusion that Maritzburg United will not accept the offer to relocate to Port Elizabeth,” Zuma told the club’s official website.
“The Chairman and the Board were appreciative of the gesture by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality for a very good and tempting offer they made to the club, but believed that remaining in Pietermaritzburg was the more reasonable option in the long-run.
“In the interests of KZN football, and in particular the football lovers of the Greater Pietermaritzburg and uMgungundlovu Areas, the club is committed to the City of Choice, and wants to thank the supporters who have been loyal to the club even in the most trying of times. The Chairman would like to thank all the people that were supportive when a critical decision had to be made, and through that support we were able to decide in this way,” Zuma added.
The Team of Choice had an amazing campaign last season in the aftermath of Steve Komphela’s appointment, who led them to the Nedbank Cup last four and two places off a top eight berth, and now that they’ll be remaining in Pietermaritzburg they’d want to continue from where they left off at the end of last season.
