Maritzburg United completed the double over Bloemfontein Celtic in a matter of days, as they completed a 2-0 win at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in an Absa Premiership match on Wednesday night.
The visitors got off to a similar start to that of the Nedbank Cup match as Clifford Mulenga was seen to have already wasted a chance, just four minutes in, after he took one touch too many.
It seemed a very defensive start to the game and in the 15th minute Michael Morton made a run and tried to split open the Celtic defence, but his concluding pass lacked the precision and power that was desired.
Two minutes later Prince Hlela was booked for a needless challenge on Felix Obada, while Francis Chansa made a fantastic save to deny Kgotso Moleko a minute later.
26 minutes in Thabani Stemmer did well to force a save out of Obada’s shot, while Letladi Madubanya produced a right-footed shot from just outside the penalty box, but it went wide left of the target.
In the 40th minute Prince Olomu broke the deadlock with a clever chip over Stemmer to hand Maritzburg the lead, 1-0.
Five minutes after the restart David Booysens received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle just outside the box, while on the hour mark Cuthbert Malajila was shown yellow for his challenge on Phenyo Mongala.
Four minutes later Chansa took a brave risk in coming off his line to intercept play, but he was successful in breaking up a dangerous attack.
Thokozani Mshengu was brought on for Mofokeng 20 minutes from time, while the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul on Malajila.
Kurt Lentjies stood up to take the spot-kick and converted without a doubt as he doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, 2-0.
Nine minutes from time Shane Boggenboer came on for Booysen, while Michael Morton received a booking for a foul on Mulenga. The defender is now set to miss the next match through suspension.
In the final minutes of play Obada forced a save out of Stemmer, but that was his last action of the game as he was taken off and replaced by Wayne Matle to see the game end 2-0 to the home side.
