Nelson Mandela Bay was the focus of intense political campaigning at the weekend as the parties ratcheted up their efforts to capture the metro in next year’s local government elections.
In a surprise turnout for the United Democratic Movement (UDM)‚ more than 6000 supporters gathered at the KwaMagxaki cricket field in Port Elizabeth on Sunday to celebrate with party leader Bantu Holomisa the party’s recent win in the Ward 30 by-election and to launch its 2016 election campaign.
Thirty cattle‚ 100 sheep‚ 20 pigs and 500 chickens were slaughtered to feed the massive crowd‚ UDM regional chairman Mongameli Bobani said.
A day earlier‚ DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip laid out his vision for the metro to about 3000 supporters at the Donkin Reserve in Port Elizabeth. – The Herald
