A man who was in the process of breaking into a house just outside of Mthatha was shot and killed by police members over the weekend after pointing a toy firearm at them.
Police spokesman, Captain Jackson Manatha, said Willowvale police had been performing their duties when they had come across eight men who were busy breaking into a house at Lubomvini locality Nkelekethe Administrative area in Willowvale, shortly before 5pm on Saturday afternoon.
“Police arrived an managed to arrest six of the men, but two fled the scene,” he said.
Manatha said police had given chase and cornered the to suspects, when one of the men drew what appeared to be a firearm.
“The policemen had no other option but to open fire, fearing that their lives were in danger,” said Manatha.
the man who had pulled the firearm, identified as 30-year-old Babini Somdaka from the Lubomvini Location Nkelekethe Village in Willowvale, was shot and killed at the scene. The second, as yet unidentified suspect, managed to get away.
Manatha said police had recovered a toy gun and a knife at the scene.
It is believed that the six men who were arrested, as well as Somdaka, were linked to a string of house robberies in the area.
Manatha said all six had been charged with house robbery and would appear in court soon. He said an inquest docket had been opened in relation to Somdaka’s death. The other man was still at large.
