Malawi will for the first time send contestants to the Commonwealth and South African Open Chess Championships scheduled to take place in the Republic of South Africa, , the Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has confirmed.
South Africa based Joseph Mwale and Richard Mbedza will be joined by Chess grandmaster Chiletso Chipanga and Ellen Mpinganjira, the only lady in the three-man and one female team.
To be hosted at the Broad walk Hotel and Casino Complex near Nelson Mandela Bay, the competition pools together 700 participants for the July 5 to 13 tourney.
Malawi nearly missed the tournament due to financial constraints despite getting an invitation in February. But the team has been bailed out by Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa which has funded met the teams expenses of accommodation, food, registration fee and return fares, including that of Kezzie Msukwa, Chessam President.
Kasparov chess foundation launched its African operations in March last year with an ultimate goal of promoting chess as a tool for education and social development.
In a related development, a Malawian renowned poet, Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa, real name Chisomo Mdalla, is scheduled to take part in a Polokwane Arts Festival where several African Poets and Artists will hold performances from July 17 to 21, and attend some writing clinics with students within Polokwane.
The Malawian poet has revealed that he will un veil two new pieces at the event.
