On the eve of the 2016 Municipal Elections National DA Leader, Mmusi Maimane addressed the media on the Donkin Reserve in Port Elizabeth.
Talking in the shadow of a a monument to love and surrounded by reminders of a statesman who loved South Africa, Maimane was sure to get a good turnout of scribes.
His full statement appears in the video below, with selected sound bites further on:
“Our growth across the country has brought a deep discomfort for our opponents. They have come in this campaign seeking to divide us on the basis of race.”
“Never in my life have I heard a more racially divisive campaign from the ANC as I have heard in this recent one.”
“I am a proud patriot of this country.”
“Jacob Zuma simply cannot understand fighting against white AND black domination.”
“The ANC has become what Thabo Mbeki correctly referred to as an ‘ignoble, parasitic and corrupt organisation’ and it is no wonder that he is not even willing to campaign for them”
“Kgalema Mothlanthe said that this country is rudderless and on auto pilot thanks to Jacob Zuma who cannot comprehend what a non-racial South Africa is.”
“I voted in Dobsonville for the first time in 1999. We knew what we had to do, we had to vote for the party that liberated us – the party of Nelson Mandela. There was no debate, we were ANC and the ANC was us and that is how everybody I knew voted. We did it for Madiba. Back then as young man barely 20 years old I could not see a day when the ANC would abandon it’s values, abandon it’s people and abandon me”
“I would hate for the people of South Africa to be deceived in the manner that the ANC is intent on deceiving the people of this country. Jacob Zuma has failed to offer the people of South Africa anything substantive, tangible and prospective. Instead he has relied on the ancestors, on using God, similar to how he has defended his entire record of government.”
“If they (ANC) are serious about dealing with corruption let them deal with Jacob Zuma first.”
“The ANC’s greatest failure in this election is that they have betrayed the people without work – 8.9 million South Africans still don’t have a job today.”
“The best branch of the ANC is in heaven.”
“(They) don’t understand what reconciliation and redress must look like and have failed the people of this country.”
“They care too much about the rich at the expense of ordinary South Africans.”
“The choice in to-morrows election is not between a black government or a white government but between a clean government or a corrupt government, between a government that creates jobs or a government that undermines the prospect of people being able to find jobs.”
“The people on the ground will never be deceived by these swindlers.”
“The only card that he ANC has is to introduce a race based fear that seems to regress this nation backwards. We will always stand for the values of Nelson Mandela and this election is about doing it for uTata for the future of this country so that we can all know what a non-racial South Africa is and what an inclusive South Africa looks like.”
“Democracy means that power must shift from one party to the next without fear or intimidation, without violence or chaos, let us now honour the democratic tradition that says when we have had enough of one government we will vote for another to take South Africa in the direction that they want.”
“The values of Nelson Mandela are values that will be continued. His values are what we are contesting for.”
“It is a time now in our nation that we put the people first and take this country in the direction that Nelson Mandela and so many others fought for – a non-racial South Africa, a prosperous nation and a South Africa for all.”
