The diligence of a local security officer led to the arrest of two suspects by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Thursday, 23 January 2014.
At about 11:40, while on patrol in Beverley Grove, ADT Security Armed Response Officer (ARO) Wesley Jackson saw two suspects who carried a flat screen television. He stopped the pair who claimed that they had found the TV abandoned in the bushes. Not convinced, Jackson requested the ADT Monitoring Centre contact the police. Officers from the Kabega Park SAPS arrived and the suspects admitted to them that they had stolen the television from a house they had burgled in Ben Kamma.
“ARO Jackson is a member of the Beverley Grove Dedicated Patrol Service (DPS) that was initiated by residents after the murder of an elderly member of the community in January 2013,” said Ryan Britz, Manager of ADT Security’s Port Elizabeth Branch. “We can report that this service has helped to significantly reduce crime in Beverley Grove.”
Britz emphasised how important it is for all role players in a community to work together to fight crime.
“A good working relationship between residents, community safety organisations, private security providers and the police is integral to curb criminal incidents, and our experience shows that it does contribute to positive results.”
