Pirates, who are the only PSL club to have claimed the title, start their quest for continental glory on Sunday as they host Angolan champions Recreativo do Libolo at PE’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
And Leal insists there is no room for complacency.
“We take the Champions League seriously,” he told Times Live. “We are the only team that is representing South Africa at this level and the PSL hasn’t been doing well in the past few years in this competition.
“And the players we have registered for the Champions League [23 in total] have been with us since the beginning of the season and have committed to winning more cups and increasing their capacity of goal-scoring.”
The Sea Robbers edged battling Black Leopards 1-0 in midweek following a seven-week break in league action.
Leal admits his men showed signs of rust and hopes for a better display on the weekend.
“We were starting to score more than just one goal per game, then the break came,” said Leal.
“Our form dropped and I think we were a lot more inferior than we expected against Leopards,” concluded the Brazilian.
