THE Southern Kings coaching staff were locked in deep discussion during their team’s training session on Monday as they dissected what went wrong at Loftus Versfeld when the Bulls thrashed them 48-18.
Director of rugby Alan Solomons and head coach Matt Sexton addressed the players in the middle of the field before they went through a rigorous training routine for Saturday’s showdown with the Stormers at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Already doomed to play a relegation match against the Lions at the end of the month, the Kings will be desperate to get back on the winning track after three successive Super Rugby defeats.
Asked whether his team could pick themselves up after the Loftus defeat, Solomons said: “They can and they will.”
The Kings will be up against a star-studded Stormers team and will need to lift their game to match the visitors, who thrashed the Cheetahs 28-3 in their last outing.
“This is our last game at home and the guys will want to finish in style. We will be very motivated for the game,” Solomons said.
The Kings will name their team to face the Stormers today.
“They did not play well at the weekend and it was a poor performance and they knew it,” Solomons said. “We had our usual flush-out today. We have to get the Bulls game out of the way and do a full review with one-on-ones with the players and put the game to bed properly.”
Notable absentees at the training session were props Schalk Ferreira and Kevin Buys, who are both suffering from minor knocks.
“We are resting Kevin today and we are hopeful he will be okay for the Stormers,” Solomons said.
“Schalk should also be fine. He has a stiff neck but should be back and 100%. Devin Oosthuizen also has a stiff back but he should be fine.
“If lock Steven Sykes comes through training on Tuesday we can consider him and that would be nice. If we do consider Steven it will be off the bench.”
Star wing Sergeal Petersen (hamstring injury) will not be available.
“What I would like is for Sergeal to come off the bench for the Currie Cup side, providing his hamstring is right,” Solomons said.
“He must be able to go flat-out and at the moment Sergeal has not run flat-out. So we have to be cautious with his injury.”
