Karoo will look like Kazakhstan if Shell’s fracking goes ahead

Developers, estate aids arrogant

THE townhouse development in South End around Pier Street was first advertised to be “in line with the area”, although no apparent consultation took place with residents.

Let’s use community spirit to create jobs

HOW disturbing to read of threats made to Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Zanoxolo Wayile by individuals demanding jobs because they were part of the struggle.

Game farms need trophy hunting

I AGREE with Jacob Ndlovu that in the short-term a ban on rhino hunting should be implemented – especially until the poaching issue is brought under control.

Dog control incapable of removing a problem dog

I HAVE had as much as I can take from dog control and, were it within my power I would fire the whole bunch of them, starting with their big boss. It is virtually impossible to get them to fine or remove a dog from a property.

No admission to universities purely on basis of being poor

I WISH to make some comments in response to the Herald article (March 28) “NMMU head backs Blade varsity admissions quota”.

Enemy is greed and corruption

The Eastern Cape government is being run into the ground and what do people do? They stage service delivery protests, loot and destroy schools, libraries, universities and clinics.

Tragic loss to M’well rugby

ON MONDAY we all woke up to the very sad and tragic news that one rugby player from the Motherwell Rugby Club had drowned and five teammates gone missing at Bluewater Bay.

Sardinia Bay car park may soon be under 10m of sand

I CONDUCTED surveys of sand dune movement at Sardinia Bay in February 2010 and 2012, covering an 800m stretch from the lifesavers’ clubhouse to south west of the car park.

State must ban trophy hunting

MY CONCERN is the trophy hunting industry and the current poaching crisis in South Africa, where a few of these businesses dominated by some white male Afrikaners, perlemoen poachers and Chinese businessmen, are involved in fuelling the rhino horn trade.

‘Bullions’ may be answer to Kings saga

TO HELP Saru/Sanzar resolve the thorny issue of Kings Rugby, here are my possible solutions:

DA councillor does not let grass grow under his feet

I WRITE in response to the letters of Paul Manasse (The Herald March 22) and Deon Minnie (The Herald March 23).

Prayers needed for rugby tragedy

THE tragedy which befell the Motherwell rugby team is quite sad indeed.

SACP deployees are still relevant in government

THE recent attack on SACP leadership by Irvin Jim has become the biggest topic of conversation in my community, among intellectuals like Zamikhaya Gxabe.

Guard against communist threat

THE proposed new security legislation (Protection of Information Bill) aimed especially against the media and the constant attacks of increasing intensity on the judiciary, especially the Constitutional Court, display a trademark tactic of the communists in their quest for a totalitarian takeover of a democratic state.

Wake up to dangers of fracking

FINALLY the authorities are realising the disaster scenarios which can result from fracking for gas and oil.

Why have the critics run to Western Cape then?

THERE’S much outrage regarding the refugee statement made by Helen Zille and I am not condoning this but aren’t we missing the point here?

How quickly we forget water woes

HAVING noticed a leaking pipe in the road under the tar outside our home I reported it to the municipal help-line. Two rings and the phone was answered – and this was the after-hours number – very impressive! But this was where the impressive service ended. I was told they would send plumbers as soon as possible, and they took my contact details. I’ve had four calls in the past two weeks but all they want to know is whether the leak has been fixed. The answer remains no – more than two weeks later!

Varsvlei mower doing inferior job

WHILE one appreciates the fact the grass in the open field behind the swimming pool in West End (popularly referred to as “Varsvlei”) has recently been cut for the first time in months, it is very frustrating that the grass cutting has generally not been done properly in the last year or two.

Calibrating petrol pumps will save consumers millions

I WOULD hereby like to draw your attention to the lack of calibration of petrol pumps, which is costing consumers millions if not billions of rands, annually.

The struggle is not over

MY NEIGHBOUR confessed to me he had never heard of the PAC before he saw me wearing the PAC T-shirt. The same neighbour commented how the documentary on SABC 1 on Tuesday night included the role Prof Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe played in where our country is today.

Sharpeville should be day of mourning

ON MARCH 21 we commemorated the Sharpeville massacre when 69 black souls were brutally murdered by the apartheid regime while they were protesting the Pass Law Act.

Consider ‘refugee’ remark in context

YOUR editorial on March 23, (“Zille march reeks of opportunistic sensation-seeking”), refers. Helen Zille and various other senior representatives of the Democratic Alliance have been vocally opposed to the conduct of Sadtu in the Eastern Cape since long before their disgraceful go-slow began, and indeed while it was under way.

Youth have no hope unless we speak up

YOUR editorial and Lawrence Troon’s letter in The Herald on March 23, on the DA Human Rights Day march refer. There is nothing opportunistic on a day as important as Human Rights Day as standing up for pupils’ rights to a decent education.

Damons is an inspiration

BRUCE Damons, you are an inspiration to me and, I’m sure, many others. Your “University of Life” series gives us insight into how young people’s minds work.

Good news is no news for EP Champs

OVER the weekend of March 16-18 the Eastern Cape Schools Athletics Championships were held at the NMMU track.

DA leader crosses line and promotes racism

YOUR editorial comment on The Herald report of March 23 titled “Zille march reeks of opportunistic sensation-seeking” was spot on, and what a piece of objective editorial from this paper.

Will ‘real’ African Madiba stand up?

I SHOULD like to reply to “Actors too short for Madiba” (The Herald of 22 March 2012).
