Komphela is still currently in charge at the Team of Choice, but he remains strongly linked with a move to newly promoted Chippa United.
Maritzburg chairman Farouk Kadodia, who has fought to hold onto Komphela since news of the potential move to Chippa first broke, is due to meet with Tim Sukazi – Komphela’s agent – on Thursday.
“Hopefully now we can put this issue to bed,” Kadodia tells KickOff.com. “I am hopeful, not confident, that we will be able to hold onto him [Komphela].”
Kadodia acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding the club over the past few weeks had made things difficult in terms of preparations for the 2014/15 campaign.
“Normally we are in a stable position at this point of pre-season,” he says. “This time we have been under a lot of pressure without a head coach.”
But the Maritzburg drama doesn’t end there and a lucrative offer from the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality remains on the table. The deal would see the Team of Choice relocate to Port Elizabeth, and Kadodia confirmed that he and the board of directors had begun discussions.
“There are one or two concerns about the move,” he says. “The short-term possibilities look good but we wouldn’t want to be in the same position we are in now in five or six years.”
Kadodia adds that any decision on the club’s future in PE would only be taken once the issue of the head coach has been resolved.
