On Women’s Day I was witness to a high profile (maybe I should say relatively well known in certain circles?) ‘gentleman’ being abusive to my wife.
The Longhair sought out and requested of this ‘gentleman’ if we could make a braai fire in the same area near to his equipment – to which he acquiesced only to come a couple of minutes later to quickly move his guitar and I jokingly said to him that I may have been tempted to use it as kindling, which did evince a smile in acknowledgement of my weak attempt at humour.
Some 5 minutes later this ‘gentleman’ came out of the pub to which he had retreated and was very aggressive accusing the Longhair of saying that she didn’t care about his guitar and had muttered “under her breath” something along the lines of “Who the f*ck cares”!
What I find remarkable is that this ‘gentleman’, who has been exposed to a lot of loud music, could still have the faculties to hear an “under the breath” remark with background music playing whilst he and I chuckled at my weak kindling joke. What is more puzzling is that he could not now remember that it was the Longhair who had sought him out to ask his permission to make a fire. So why would the Longhair then make a remark about not caring? Doesn’t make sense!
There followed a number of abusive return visits to us around the fire by an increasingly drunker tone deaf ‘gentleman’ and his friends who had a small child with them.
Of course we tackled this group of vipers and pointed out that they were illegally smoking in a public place and placing the child in a highly compromised situation by exposing it to alcohol and second hand cigarette smoke. Apparently it is only ‘common’ people that care for small children’s health by pointing out the wrongs that parents do! Go Figure.
Fingers in our faces – I didn’t bite any of them this time as I have learned that particular lesson – and the name calling and abuse carried on.
Luckily sanity prevailed as the Longhair held me back from smashing a brick into this deranged manic excuse for a ‘gentleman’ who continued to call us all kinds of sexually impossible names along with accusing us of being members of a cult who ‘got off’ on videoing other people – fun and games until they staggered off later that night to drive home in a drunken haze with me quietly praying that the only accident they would have later would be to drive into a large stationary tree and not some person going home to a loving family.
One can only conclude that this tone deaf and deaf ‘gentleman’ has had some issues in his past life that involved women, drink, drugs and equipment abuse. I do feel deeply sorry for him in that he has not come to terms with his failures and continues to seek solace in substances which he clearly abuses in order to give him the Dutch courage to prove his lack of manliness by abusing innocent people.
Anyway, my ‘friend’ if you have worked out that it is you that I am talking about then please do come back for that hug that I offered you. I may not be a psychologist but I do recognise a troubled soul in need of a bit of nurturing AND I can direct you to a LIST of Psychologists in Port Elizabeth qualified to assist you with your substance abuse and mommy issues that you have.
Good luck and remember that in the absence of a public apology I will not be supporting you or the establishment at which you play – or will at least try to stay away from you and it for as long a time as possible.
