JOHANNESBURG – The parents of Reeva Steenkamp say they are left frustrated and heartbroken when the media falsely attributes them.
After months of silence June and Barry Steenkamp communicated with the public via a media release last night-saying that this week in particular has been an emotional and painful one for them.
Monday would have marked Reeva’s 30th birthday – on the same day paralympian Oscar Pistorius made a brief court appearance.
The bladerunner is facing a murder charge following the shooting of Reeva on Valentine’s day this year.
June and Barry Steenkamp made no mention of Oscar Pistorius’s murder trial in their statement released last night, but they did thank the media for showing restraint during this difficult week.
The Steenkamp’s main message was an appeal to the media to stop incorrectly quoting them saying it is impossible for any outlet to attribute them as they have not spoken publicly for months.
The couple added that they will tell Reeva’s story when they have had time to deal with their loss, but until then they have requested that they not be directly contacted for comment.
