In a setback for the beneficiaries of the Bethelsdorp Development Trust, the Eastern Cape High Court (Port Elizabeth) has refused to remove the only remaining trustee, who is accused of fraud and theft, says a report in The Herald.
Ronald Niegaardt and co-accused Robert Gallagher appeared in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court last month on two counts of fraud and theft totalling about R8m. Niegaardt is the only remaining trustee of the Bethelsdorp Development Trust after his co-trustees resigned. Last week Judge Nomathamsanqa Beshe refused to order Niegaardt’s removal, ruling that those who had applied to the court did not have the right authority to do so and also said their application was not urgent.
