New Mandela Bay metro mayor, Danny Jordaan, on Thursday presented his budget for the municipality at a special Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting.
The budget was passed, despite the Democratic Alliance’s opposition to it, and will see public spending being cut and electricity and water tariffs being increased.
Jordaan’s new budget sees massive cuts in public spending. There will be no more overseas trips for councillors, less money will be spent on car hiring and public holiday celebrations while there’s also a moratorium on the hiring of non-essential staff.
The spending cuts have seen the budget swing from a R430-million deficit to a R42-million surplus.
Residents in the municipality will have to brace for increases in rates, electricity and water tariffs. The rates will increase by 9.5 percent, electricity by 12.2 percent and water by 13 percent, eNCA reported.
