The devastating labour figures released today show that unemployment in NMB is increasing to crisis levels.
The ANC governed Nelson Mandela Bay is the Metro with the highest unemployment in South Africa, and the tragic levels of unemployment are rising.
It is an indictment on the tenure of ANC Mayor, Danny Jordaan, that now one in every three people is unable to find work in the Bay, with 33,2% unemployment.
More people in NMB are without jobs and without hope than before Jordaan was parachuted into the Metro by the ANC.
But while hundreds of thousands of NMB residents go without work, Mayor Jordaan sees fit to employ a criminal, Linda Mti, into high office in the Metro.
Under Jordaan we see jobs for criminals, rather than jobs for the unemployed.
Jobs must be created by investing in infrastructure-led growth that creates a conducive environment for private sector investment. Through the creation of a fair and comprehensive Expanded Public Works Programme, thousands more people will be able to access employment opportunities.
Through opening the doors to small business growth, and establishing small business one stop shops to help our entrepreneurial residents thrive, NMB could have avoided this unemployment crisis.
The DA is ready to govern the Bay. By being honest and responsive, a DA-led government in Nelson Mandela Bay will make our Metro safe again, provide opportunity, deliver better services and work tirelessly to redress economic inequality.
The change we need to move forward again begins with a DA government that will create jobs by making it easy to start and grow business in NMB.
