This year, the Nelson Mandela University’s Department of Public Relations and Communication Studies has partnered with SAFREA (Southern African Freelancers Association) to host its 9th Annual Student Conference which will take place on 1 September 2017 at the North Campus Conference Centre from 08:30am to 13:00. Members of SAFREA kindly accepted Acting Head of Department, Dr Adelina Mbinjama-Gamatham’s request to provide the department with five guest speakers for the upcoming student conference.
Bryan Howard, Chairperson of SAFREA Eastern Cape chapter will be the keynote speaker and proposed that the theme of the conference be “Freelancing for Success”. Howard is an internationally experienced business development contractor and marketing consultant.
“My presentation will be entitled ‘It’s Not in my Job Description!’ – a fast paced, humorous but hard-hitting analysis of what it means to be self-employed” said Howard.
Other guest speakers include journalism lecturer, Carey Finn-Maeda, Lize Hayward of Clear Communications, Carol Leff, a freelancer in design, proofreading and editing, and Samantha Venter, a freelance writer, corporate communication consultant and project manager.
“The conference intends to introduce students to entrepreneurship and freelancing. Concepts to be covered will include ethics, copyright, contracts, pricing, marketing PR, business etiquette, business English, professionalism and negotiating skills” said Gamatham.
Two students have already benefited from the partnership with SAFREA, having been granted free membership with the professional body for a year.
Howard appeals to all Eastern Cape Safreans to consider sharing some aspects of freelancing that they feel will better equip and empower prospective freelancers at the conference. Entrance is free.
