An International Film Festival that will be launched soon as a signature event has the potential to reposition Nelson Mandela Bay as a global city, said Mcebisi Jonas, Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
“We are currently speaking with international players and specific details will be made available when we officially launch the global film festival that will be based in Nelson Mandela Bay,” he said at a press conference held at the Port Elizabeth City Hall today.
MEC Jonas added that his department has been looking at turnaround strategies for the two Metropolitan Municipalities for approximately 18 months since these Category A municipalities are recognized as the engines of economic growth in the province.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality was established on 5 December 2000 and the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality came into being after the May 2011 local government elections.
Jonas said several initiatives are under way to ensure that the two municipalities become the gateway for the provincial economy. A rail link between Nelson Mandela Bay and the Northern Cape to ensure a link for a manganese smelter at Coega, constant lobbying for improved spending by Transnet in the Port of Ngqura and the Port of Port Elizabeth and the launch of the global film festival are just some of the examples mentioned.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Deputy Executive Mayor Chippa Ngcolomba supported the call for an economic boost and the directive that Nelson Mandela Bay should become a vibey city by saying that a 24-hour city concept was one of recent resolutions adopted by the ruling ANC.
“We acknowledge this important announcement by the MEC and would like to see that we reach the milestones as we continue with our developmental agenda.
“I am sure that the Nelson Mandela Bay community will be excited about our plans as well,” Deputy Executive Mayor Ngcolomba added.
Details of the launch of the International Film Festival and its benefits will be announced soon.
