A 54-year-old Filipino sailor on board the container vessel Shasta was rescued after suffering a head injury, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Thursday.
NSRI Port Elizabeth station commander Ian Gray said the duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer IV at around 9.50pm on Wednesday to evacuate the sailor.
“At Midday, NSRI Port Elizabeth were placed on alert by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a request for medical assistance from SHASTA reporting a 54-year-old Filipino sailor onboard suffering a laceration to his head and an injured side body suffering blunt trauma sustained in a fall against a hatch onboard,” said Gray.
“On arrival on-scene, 2 nautical miles off-shore, the patient was found to be walking wounded and he was hoisted off the ship in a harness and taken ashore aboard our sea rescue craft.”
Gray said the man was transported to hospital in a stable condition.
